Buenos Aires, May 6, 2022. Genneia, the leading renewable energy generation company in Argentina, and 360Energy, the leading company in development, erection and operation of solar farms in the country, are working together for the Petrel Base, in Argentine Antarctica, to have a solar photovoltaic farm. The purpose of this project is to generate clean energy to equip and meet the annual consumption demand of the future permanent delegation at the Base, which is in the process of being reactivated by the Antarctic Command as a future logistic hub in the region.
The Petrel Base is located on rocks 18 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Rosamaría glacier on the Petrel roadstead of Dundee Island in the Joinville Archipelago, about 1,100 kilometers away from Ushuaia.
The solar farm will be situated next to the premises of the Base with an installed capacity of 50 kWac. The construction site will extend over 1000 square meters, and it will consist of 200 polycrystalline panels. The project will have a remote monitoring system in place to be operated from the permanent radio station of the Joint Petrel Antarctic Base.
Alejandro Ivanissevich, CEO of 360Energy, noted: “We are two Argentine companies committed toward the country and energy transformation, and it is in such context that we came up with this initiative to support the reactivation of the Petrel Base by donating a solar photovoltaic farm that will enable the Base to have clean and renewable energy in this so special region.”
“We are very proud of this alliance with 360Energy, a leading company in development, erection and operation of solar farms in the country, to supply renewable energy to the Petrel Base. Being able to contribute to the challenge of fighting climate change and the energy transition is our main DNA and being part of these projects creates a distinctive value for environmental care,” said Jorge Brito, shareholder of Genneia.
In view of the climate conditions of the place, the installation of the solar photovoltaic farm at the Petrel Base will start with the Antarctic campaign 2023 and the construction will be carried out by personnel of the Joint Antarctic Command, including the concrete foundations to be completed on-site. The engineers responsible for the project from 360Energy will be in charge of supervision and it is expected to be operational in March 2023.
